Play and learning go hand in hand as child and adult pairs conceptualize, design, and create an original computer game. Back by popular demand—and led again by programmer, game designer, and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Assistant Professor Ian Schreiber—Video Game Creation Workshop is offered in two age-specific sessions, each limited to 20 child-adult pairs.
Discover exciting facets of game design through innovative, hand-on learning experiences in museum classrooms. Observe video game designers at an optional session during the Global Game Jam site at RIT. Then, for your final session, participate in an all-day Game Jam at The Strong, where pairs will construct and share their games.
Video Game Creation Workshop provides a window into STEM-based career fields and encourages a lifelong love of play. Previous programming or coding experience is not required.

- Sunday, February 3, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m: All-ages, all-day game jam and free museum admission
Please note: In the event of a weather-related cancellation, the make-up class will be held the next day (Sunday) at the same time.
Enrollment for the entire six-session program is $79 for session A and $99 for session B and includes both child and adult. Each registered child must be accompanied by their adult at each session. Children or adults beyond the 1:1 child to adult ratio will not be permitted to attend workshop sessions. Advanced registration with payment is required. Space is limited to 20 child-adult pairs per session. Early registration is encouraged.
Participant pairs should plan to bring their own laptop. Laptops should meet the following minimum specifications: Windows XP or later with 512 MB RAM, 128 MB graphics, and screen resolution of 1024 x 600 (or equivalent for Mac). Electricity and Wi-Fi connectivity will be provided by the museum. Should a participant pair be unable to bring a laptop, a limited number of computers may be available on-site. All sessions, other than the optional RIT Game Jam, take place at The Strong in museum classrooms. Guests will enter through the main entrance and check-in at the security kiosk.
About Workshop Instructor Ian Schreiber
Ian Schreiber has been in the video game industry since the year 2000, first as a programmer and then as a game designer. He has worked on six published game titles, two serious game simulations, and several other projects. He has co-authored two books on games (Challenges for Game Designers and Breaking Into the Game Industry), and has released two free, open-access online game design courses (http://gamedesignconcepts.wordpress.com and http://gamebalanceconcepts.wordpress.com). Schreiber has taught game design and development courses at Ohio University, Columbus State Community College, and Savannah College of Art and Design, and is currently an Assistant Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. He is one of the co-founders of Global Game Jam, the largest annual game creation event in the world.
